Having playstation 3 issues - no display on tv when turning on ps3. What gives? Have tried 2 tvs.?

My stepson brought over his ps3 and we tried hooking it up to 2 different hd tvs using two different hdmi cables, however after powering on the ps3 we were not able to get any display on either television when turned to the hdmi channels. He knows his playstation works because he was using it at his dad's house right before he came over to our house. So it kind of seems like there should be nothing wrong with either the tvs, the hdmi cables, or the ps3.

I also have a ps3 however I recently sent it in for repair because I was basically having the same problems with it, however I tried it on one tv only. In addition however, my ps3 was crashing frequently and could not be turned off by holding down the power button in front, I had to turn it off using the switch in back, so I'm pretty sure there was something seriously wrong with my ps3. My stepsons ps3 however does not have issues with crashing and we can turn it off using the power button in the front of the machine.

So I'm kind of at a loss as to what's going on. I find it hard to believe both of my hd tvs are having problems. The hdmi output on the main hd tv was working just fine a week ago (right before I sent in my ps3 for repair). I also find it hard to believe both of the hdmi cables (mine and his) are not working, and I also find it hard to believe there's something wrong with his ps3 which was working just great earlier today on the tv at his house.

So does anyone have any ideas on what's going on? This is a very bizarre problem and it seems like there shouldn't be wrong with anything. Maybe it's the way I'm hooking things up, but it's not like it's extremely complicated to hook up a ps3. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

try this: when it is off, hold down the power button in the front for five seconds. the ps3 will emit a beep, this resets it to lower res mode, then it will say on the screen that it can do hdmi, click ok, and it will autodetect the right settings for you, then it will work, if it doesn't something else is wrong

Well hopefully I can help some. I had the same problem but mine was somewhat backward from what your saying. Let me explain.

I have HDMI at home. When I say this, I am also saying I have the HDMI cable as well. The one with just one cable. It plugs in like a USB will.

I took my PS3 with me to a hotel because I travel. When I attampted to hook it up using the three prong cable. Nothing would show up either. I pretty much figured it out myself but, the reason why this happened was because I had the settings setup for my tv at home using the HDMI cable.(One plug)

I decided to go down and buy myself a tv that has the HDMI plug as I do at home. So, the bottom line is, if you are using the One cable type and them try to use one with three prongs, the settings will still be setup for just the one and it wont work. Suggestion. Go to some place like wall mart and ask them to allow you to plug into one of their tv's. Tell them the problem. If they will allow, you can change the settings back to normal tv. I hope this helps.

Good luck

First off. You don't have to "ASK" him if he went in your room and switched your brand new PS3 for his ps2? Sounds like he is a bully to me. When he is not home go into his room switch out your ps3 and put his ps2 back into his room plug it in place it nicely and plug your ps3 back in. If this is his house and it is like this constantly I would look into other arrangements. If not go to hardware store buy a keylocking door handle. And install it in your door. And keep it locked at all times. I speak from expirence and Roommates are a touchy thing. Sorry to ramble. Just trying to help. If he has an issue with it he can buy his own. IM me if you have any more questions

The first answer should do the trick. The problem is that your stepson undoubtedly has been playing his system on a visual setting that is not HDMI, so the system is set to play on either the composite or component setting.

If the auto detect does not work. Ask your stepson if he used composite or component cables. Hopefully you have the cables on hand, so you could just hook it up using those...the picture should appear. Hook up the HDMI cable...then go to Video Settings and switch the output setting to HDMI....unhook the composite/component cables and play away.

Edit: I would have emailed you, but you don't allow them. After you do all that I mentioned please make sure that your TV is tuned to the correct input.
