It's the new 299.99 PS3, my brother says there is a chip missing or something. I really want to play Sims 2 Castaway, but it's only for the PS2. A little help here guys? It's also NOT a PS3 Slim.

Sony provides a Playstation 3 Backwards Compatibility Status database which enables you to find the current status of backwards compatibility for specific video games.

http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

and it says there should be no problem for any of there models and this game...

oh, and if a chip was missing, it wouldnt work at all.

properly the only ones that are backwards properly suited are the 20 GB, 60GB, and a few 80GB fashions now all the PS3s that are bought in shops are no longer backwards properly suited often if a PS3s has 4 usb slots and a memory card readers you might have a backwards properly suited and if it basically has 2 usb slots then it is not backwards properly suited the only places you will locate the BC PS3s could be ebay and nowhere else do no longer pay attention to matt he's a s***container 360 fanboy

what ever model it is if it isn't a 20/40/60 gig PS3 chances are it isn't backwards compatible. Your brother is wrong there isn't a chip missing they just don't add the chip to the new PS3's that's why they are a lot cheaper than the originals you can't add a chip because if you **** something up they won't replace it cause you removed the casing. So you can't get a new and by new i mean unused PS3 that is backwards compatible because they don;t manufacture them anymore. You might be able to get a used one off eBay. BTW I'm really glad now that i bought a PS3 when they were completely backwards compatible

the 40GB NEVER played PS2 games!!! quit telling people that it does!!!

backward compatibility for the PS3 with PS2 games is as follows on NTSC systems:

20GB (4 USB slots, no longer in production) - yes

60GB (4 USB slots, no longer in production) - yes

80GB with 4 USB slots (no longer in production, bundled with MGS4 or Motor Storm) - yes

40GB (2 USB slots, no longer in production) - NO

80GB with 2 USB slots - NO

160GB (2 USB slots) - NO

120GB/slim (2 USB slots) - NO

any other up coming PS3's - NO

PAL systems only have one backwards compatible system, and that's the 60GB.

in short: if it has 4 USB slots, yes. if it has 2 USB slots, no.

all PS3s play PS1 games.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3#Model_comparison

"If a PLAYSTATION 3 is not backward compatible, you will not be able to add this function through any hardware (i.e., changing the hard disk drive) or software (i.e., updates, homebrew) upgrades or modifications. "

that came DIRECTLY from Sony's own website: http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=232&p_sid=1P9bCDwj

and no, not all PS2 games or PS1 games will work. the 20GB and 60GB come the closest to being fully backwards compatible with PS2 games, but they still do not play 100% of those games or PS1 games. if you buy a backwards compatible PS3 and want to know which of your PS2 games work, check this link: http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

like Hank Hill said, tape a PS2 to your PS3. like I said, it is NOT possible to make your PS3 play PS2 games. CAN'T BE DONE.

The new PS3's CANNOT play ANY PS3 games. Foxy was thinking f the original 80 and 60 gig models.

You can play PS1 games, and download PS1 games from the playstation store.

I think I read somewhere that they are working on software that will enable the PS3 to emulate PS2 games, and that it will be included in a software update sometime.

You can not play ps2 games. They are not backward compatible. Only the first ps3s that were released had that ability and it was only the 80 gig i believe but as of now you will not be able to.

Yeah, what Foxy said. Also, I'm not 100% sure I heard my son correctly(and of course he's not answering his cell phone for me to verify) but I think he purchases and downloads certain ps2 games directly to his ps3 via the internet connection? help me out here Foxy, is that right?

my son has a PS2 and as far as i know, you can't play them at all on a PS3. They have to make sure you buy new games so that they make more money.

Unless it is an orginal 60gb model, it will not play PS2 games. You can't get a chip for it or anything to make it play them, it just won't. Sorry.

ps3 cant play ps2 games thats why its a C-R-A-P invention

you need to buy some kind of extra hardware from a retailer to allow you to play them
