I really have a question that's been burning me up recently about the PS3...
This is for all people who know a good deal about the PS3... According to the Lost Planet (PS3) guide it says, and I quote, "To edit your user name, go to the PLASTATION 3 system settings and select Online ID (Please be aware that this is NOT your Online Name. You can confirm the contents of your Online ID on the PLAYSTATION 3 system's home menu."
Umm... I went there but I could not find it... Can you really just change your online name? It says in the guide you can, but why would they put it in if you can't?
Anyone know what this means?

Since about a year ago I have looked far a wide for a way to do this. I put my clan tag in my username, because I was used to doing that for ps2, and now I end up with my clan tag twice, because the games all add it again. But I don't think there is a way to change it, outside of scrapping your account and making a new one. Which of course would mean giving up all your downloaded content which for me would be unacceptable. Creating a second user account is a pointless solution for the same reason, if you have downloaded games or don't want to have to re-do your entire friends list.

I have been meaning to call Sony customer service about it but never got around to it. If there is a way, they would know. Their number is on playstation.com.

The Online ID just changes your login email. So if your PSN name was JoeBLow1234, it wouldn't change.

To make a new PSN name, you need to register a new account. To do this, you create a new account (by creating a new user, which is all the way to the left on the cross-media bar). Then sign up for PSN again.

Hope I could help.

I don't believe this feature is available in North America yet....I have also seen this with players I meet online (call of duty 4) and they all have been Japanese players, so my guess is that it's possible to do this only in Japan as of now.

There is no way to "change" your online display name. The only way you can "change" it is by creating a new one. Be advised, I did this and it wipes out your entire hard drive of all your saved game data. You might be able to back this up before changing naes, but I am not positive.

If you're talking about changing your PSN ID, there is no way to do that other than to create a new ID.
