How do I play .divx movie files on a PS3?

Question

Using my home PC as a media server (with Windows Media Player) I can access and play songs and most movies. I am having difficulty playing DivX files created with DivX Author (.divx file extension).

My goal is to convert my DVD's to a divx movies and make them available for playback on my PS3.
