Question:
Why is my PS3 NOT displaying in full 1080p on games? (PLEASE READ DETAILS)?

Ok, let me clarify here. I do understand that some games do not support 1080p like Uncharted 2. That is not what I am trying to display in 1080p. All of the games that I want to display in 1080p DO support that definition. Games like Madden NFL 10, GTA 4, and Assassin's Creed 2. When I start them, they just bump down to 720p. 720p ain't so bad, but I want the full experience.

Now, with that being said, if I go to Display Settings and set the only resolutions supported by my TV to 480p (must always be on) and 1080p, USUALLY those games do display in 1080p (sometimes they drop to 480p, eek!).

However, that is a big hassle to have to switch it every time I want to play a game not 1080p ready. Hope I didn't lose you there!

Also, brief details here:

I have a 46" JVC LCD TV with full support for 480p, 480i, 720p, 1080i, & 1080p displays

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the only PS3 game I own that displays as it should without adjusting the settings, in 1080p

All Blu-Rays, DVDs, the XMB, and PS1 classics display in full 1080p

Im using a $35 Vizio HDMI cable that I have used for a little less than a year now.

This issue has lasted for as long as I can remember

Please guys, help me here. Even if you don't have a solution, just tell me why its happening so's I can sleep better at night!

Seems like your doing everything right. In the display settings though, just select all of the available settings. There isn't a problem. Even though some games say it can display in 1080p, usually its best displayed at a lower resolution. The Ps3 will choose whats best.

My tv does the same thing and it does that because it feels that the game will run better in that resolution so it sets it that way automatically. When you go in and adjust the setting, you are overriding the adjustment. There is no real way to fix that, it is always going to do that because it is a hard wired setting in the system and tv. They will always try to run in the "best" setup.

it may be the cable because mine doesnt do that. you might need to update you cable you need a HDMI 1.3a cable and not a cheap one and yes the newest version is important because some features may not be included. they have a hdmi cable specific for the ps3 go try that one.
