PS3 trouble with surround sound when playing Bluray discs?

I'm having trouble with surround sound when playing BluRay discs on PS3. The PS3 connects to my surround sound receiver using optical cable. I know it only happens with BluRay discs because I can play video (.AVI) that has 5.1 surround sound via PS3 (my receiver displays all the channels it's got signals from). But, when playing BluRay discs, the sound is only stereo (2 channels). I think it only happened rather recently, but I hadn't watched Bluray movies for a while. My system hasn't been updated for more than a year, but I don't think this is really the problem as (again I think) it worked fine before.

Please let me know what is wrong with BluRay playback, how I can fix it, and if it's a setting that I overlooked. I think it's a setting mix-up, but I tried and failed to make it works.

Thank you,
T

I'm not certain if this will help but if you have got the audio set up as dual output on the audio, i.e. the sound will play through the TV as well as the surround sound then the output will be in stereo. The last update changed the settings so that in audiio settings it is now possible to have dual output where audio is played through the HDMI lead as well as the optical lead which causes the output on both channels to be stereo, so you have to manually change the audio settings to optical output only. I know you said you were getting 5.1 from other souces but that is the only reason I can think of, I haven't played any bluray movies but most of the games have 5.1 and they seem to work fine on my system but before I altered the settings I think I was getting stereo too. I hope this works for you and it is usually wise to read what the updates actually install rather than just taking it on faith.

by way of all skill specific, the PS3 can play Blu-Ray discs. in actuality, all of the video games that come on PS3 are on Blu-Ray format. The psthree replaced into the 1st Blu-Ray participant commercially attainable on the industry. it could additionally play DVDs and CDs besides.
