You can use any type of ext HDD ! That HDD will work but remember you have to format any HDD for the PS3 to file format FAT32 !

After you format it, you then just plug it into the PS3 USB port !

Step by step guide !

1. Connect the external hard drive to your computer using your USB cord

2. Open your "Start" menu and click on the following string of menu options: "Control Panel," "Administrative Tools," "Computer Management" and "Disk Manager."

3. Select the external hard drive and give attention to the type of "File System." If it reads "NTFS," then right-click it and choose "Delete Partition." This will ensure the partition you use is "FAT32." If it's not "FAT32," then proceed to Step 4. If it is "FAT32," then move on to Step 5.

4. Run an Internet search for "CompuApps Swiss Knife." You'll find the official website within the first few search results. Simply enter the site and download the free application. Once downloaded, install the program and run it. When you're inside the program, choose the external hard drive that needs to be partitioned. Configure the settings in the following manner: "Partition Type-Primary," "File System-FAT32" and "Volume Label." Choose "Create" and your FAT 32 partition will be set up. Proceed to Step 5.

5. Open "My Computer" and click twice on your empty external PS3 hard drive. Right click within this area, move your cursor down to "New," and select "Folder." Name this folder "Photo." Repeat this process to create three more new folders: "Music," "Video" and "Game." This will ensure the folders on your external hard drive are identical to those on your PS3.

6. Click the green arrow in the bottom right corner of your screen to remove and choose "Safely Remove." Unplug your external PS3 hard drive once a message appears indicating it's safe to do so.

7. Connect your external hard drive to your PS3 and enjoy.

Hope this helps you !

ANY external hard drive will work AS LONG as it is FAT32 FORMAT!!! If you buy a NTFS format it will not recognize it. There are programs to convert a NTFS drive into FAT32 like "CompuApps SwissKnife" but if you do not want to go thru the hassle of formatting, then buy a USB hard drive that is compatible with an APPLE MAC computer... I hope this helps you

usb speed is not made for playing games, heck accessing hd videos on a usb flash drive is a pain because it loads like crap.

you needs a laptop sata hdd (newegg/ebay better than getting rip off at bestbuy) and a super slim hdd caddy (ebay $10)

just plug the USB port to the PlayStation with the external hard drive and then you can easily back it up. nearly every external hard drive works with the PlayStation and if I may suggest when you shop around for brand new hard drive to replace the small capacity one you have on the PlayStation 3 look for 2.5 inch seagate hard drive I have 750 gigabyte on mine

You need to install an internal hard drive to get more storage space. The PS3 cannot use external hard drives for saving or game data. You can copy files to a hard drive and backup your system but you cannot save or load directly from an external hard drive and you can't install anything on one.

You'll have to find a 2.5" SATA hard drive (notebook hard drive) and a PS3 HDD mounting bracket as the 12GBs don't include one, and it's necessary to install the drive.
