If he is between 6-13 years old, get him the Wii. If he is older, get him either the PS3 or Xbox 360. If you don't have a hd TV, I suggest you to get the Xbox 360, all that extra money for the PS3 wouldn't be worth it if you only have a standard TV. If you do have a hd TV, there is another way to narrow it down. If he has the PS2 already, get him the PS3, so that his old games will still be compatible. If he has an Xbox get him the Xbox 360 because his original Xbox games will still work on the 360. If he has both, get him the PS3.

There's too much misinformation about the PS3 in here. Frankly, everyone is like "the PS3 80gb has software emulation!" which leads everyone to be like "Why doesn't the 40gb play ps2 games if it's software!! omg sony sukks!!1!"

80GB has the GPU from the PS2, and the CPU is emulated through software. This plays about 85% of PS2 games. The 40GB has no PS2 chips, so doesn't play any PS2 games. What everyone forgets to mention is that ALL PS3s PLAY ALL PS1 GAMES. Not that this matters to most people, but you can play PS1 games.

Really, if people are telling you the PS3 sucks if you don't have HD aren't really gamers. They're just in it for the graphics. The games are fun still, and the graphics are still loads better than the PS2. The 360 and PS3 look similar in SD as far as quality goes. What sets the PS3 apart is the ability to natively render things in HD, whereas the 360 uses a hardware scaler to upscale all games to 720p or 1080p. But you shouldn't care about this since you don't have an HDTV. If you plan to get one eventually, you might want to make this a purchasing consideration. If you got a PS3, you'd already have a Bluray player, though it's probable the 360 will release an add-on. For how much, nobody knows, though my guess is $200 since that's what the HD DVD add-on was when it first released.

A feature you could use regardless of your TV is media streaming and movie playback. The PS3 allows for DivX and .h264 playback, in addition to media streaming. The 360 also has divx playback, but it's not "certified," meaning not everything is guaranteed to work on it. All DivX versions (except for 3.11 and the latest) are guaranteed to work on the PS3 [2gb file cap for divx files].

Unless you live in Europe, where the price just dropped for the 360, I don't believe the price is going to drop any time soon. Sony is increasing the value of the 80gb bundle by releasing a MGS4 package in June, which comes with a rumble/motion controller instead of the standard motion controller that it currently comes with.

If you plan on gaming on wireless, the PS3 might be a better deal, since 1) you don't have to buy a $100 wifi add-on and 2) You don't have to pay $50 a year to play online [which is free on PC, PS3, PS2, and Wii]. Sure, some may argue that the 360 has achievements, but the PS3 will get their own version of that with the implementation of Home and in-game XMB.

So really you're choosing between the system for exclusives (since 3rd party games are the same), and future potential. The 360 has games out now [someone mentioned about the PS3 having a lack of variety, you can say that about the 360. It's FPS, Sports, or racing for 3/4 of the library. 25% of X360 games with a Metascore of 80 or higher are FPS], along with in-game messaging. The PS3 will get that in the future (hopefully soon, though it could be summer before we get it). A bunch of PS3 exclusives that have been hyped are releasing this year, whereas most of the 360 hyped games have been released.

In regards to failure rates. The 360 failure rate is not 4 in 10 (40%). Initial models were placed at ~33%, and now the estimate is at 16% (RROD and disc drive failures). The PS3 is at under 2%, mainly with disc drive failures. Unlike what you hear from some people, the PS3 does not overheat, so you do not need one of those add-on fans. Add-on fans for any system are stupid, and actually damage your system because their airflow is less than the built-in fans.

The 360 is rumored to have another 2 hardware upgrades in it's life span; one being for re-using the original busted 360 shells, and one for the 65nm GPU. A possible 3rd release is in the works if the GPU and CPU can be combined onto a single chip, like Sony did with the PS2.

People talk of a rumored "120gb" PS3, but it's false. It ended up being the re-released 80gb package.

So your choice is future potential (PS3) or satisfaction for the moment (360).

you are better off getting a ps3 because...

- ps3 has a built-in blu-ray player

-ps3 supports 1.3 HDMI which has rich colors and xbox supports 1.2 HDMI

- ps3 has much more and better exclusives, most of them cant go to xbox 360 because it cant handle that many data(DVD- 8.5gb, blu-ray 50gb)

- because of the blu-ray's huge space, ps3 will have WAY better graphics than 360

- online is free for ps3 not like 360

- ps3 will have over 300 games released by this spring

- you can browse the internet on ps3, no such thing for xbox 360

- when developers get used to the system, the graphics will be WAY better than 360. should take them a year to get used to it

- developers stated that they will start using ps3 as the lead platform and port ps3 games to xbox

- playstation home is coming out this spring, its a virtual community where you can hang out with friends and customize your own apartment which xbox doesnt have(FREE)

- ps3 is a true HD console. xbox 360 upscale games to 1080p and ps3 DISPLAY games up to 1080p

- built in Wi-Fi

- xbox 360: 33% hardware failure

ps3: .2% hardware failure(see the decimal? less than 1%!)

- ps3 has better back-comp except the 40gb

- rumble returns in spring 2008

- xbox 360 already has been maxed out to its potential with gears of war. ps3 has not been maxed out yet- look at uncharted drakes fortune, better graphics than gears and its only 30% of ps3’s potential

- you can upgrade your harddrive without voiding warranties with any 2.5 HDD, which xbox cant because you have to buy a xbox HDD

(they actually have the step by step on how to upgrade it on playstation.com)

those are the ones that i know right off my mind but there are much more reason than this

Now I want you to do me a favor, list all the reasons why xbox is better than ps3. I PROMISE you that nobody will get at least 5 reasons

if you get ps3, look at this, you will be able to play metal gear solid 4, haze, killzone 2, resistance 2(60 player online!!!!), final fantasy XIII, motorstorm 2, little big planet, better version of GTA IV, god of war 3, uncharted drake's fortune, heavenly sword, ratchet and clank, SOCOM: confrontation, gran turismo 5, ETC- http://news.filefront.com/ps3-exclusives...

Prices as of today:

ps3- 80gb: $499 with motorstorm

40gb: $399 with spiderman 3 blu-ray

xbox 360(premium)- $349

(elite)- $449

if you want the accessories that ps3 comes with, that would add up to over 700 dollars, so that means ps3 is cheaper

xbox 360 pricing to match ps3's features:

$349/$449- console

$50- XBL subscription(only for 1 YEAR) pay $50 every year

$100- wi-fi adaptor

$200- HD-DVD drive add-on

spiderman 3 blu-ray movie/motorstorm

online- free

rechargeable battery- built in the controller

wi-fi built in

blu-ray player(better than HD-DVD) built in

all comes out to $399/$499, oh my,look at that, its the same price as before

By far the console with the greatest value is the PS3. Blu-ray will make your movies look better, but the TV you have may not make it look its best. Xbox 360 is pretty good because it has a great selection of games, other than that... that's all Xbox has going for it. XBL costs money compared to PSN and the PSN with Home coming out soon which is great (I'm in the BETA and I absolutely love it!). The PS3 also has a Wi-Fi connection built in so that is a definate plus, but PS3 does not have quite the extensive games library as the Xbox. PS3 is coming out with more games like MGS4, Haze, Little Big Planet, Home, RFOM 2 etc. So in conclusion if you want great games now, get a 360. If you wan the best value out of a system with great promise in the future get a PS3.

I agree with the other guy....I would say by far the PS3.

I say this because for one, the XBox's have a horrible failure rate. 4 out of every 10 XBox's get something call the "Red Ring of Death" which destroys the XBox System. (This figure was from a guy at a gamestop) the PS3 also has a better assortment of games out (and coming out) in my opinion . PS3 home which is a virtual 3D online community for the PS3 is coming out soon in the spring and it is going to be amazing! (For more info on home visit: http://www.us.playstation.com )

The version that you get depends on the features you want. For example, if you want backwards compatablity for PS2 games get the more expensive 80Gb version.

P.S. If you choose to get a PS3 meet me online sometime in their free online! (Not $50 Bucks)

My opinion:

Both PS3 and Xbox 360 have exelent games. If you care about playing online the PS3 is better because its free and in just 1 to two years of online play with the Xbox it would be like buying a PS3. The down side is you have to buy your own headset for PS3. 2008 is the year for PS3 games and becuase the PS3 game disk can hold 50+ Gb of memory capared to Xbox 9Gb memory some games will not work on the xbox in the furture. I would go for the 80 gb ps3 if you want backwards capitbility and online play. If you just want online play go with the 40 gb version. If you don't want online play or backwards capatiblity get the standerd Xbox 360.

ps- a little unknow fact the pS3 controler is also motion sensing and some games will use its motion capapilities

Thats all I have to say hope you are happy with what you get

I think as long as you can rule out the Blu-Ray factor, now and in the future, Xbox is the better way to go. They've got a better selection of games and a much cheaper price.

Right now I am very frustrated because every game for the PS3 seems to be a sports game, or involves the endless slaughter of people, zombies or aliens. Not much variety.

But it plays Blu-Ray discs great.

Alright I own all 3 sytems right now and I play all three. I'm talking about the Playstation 3, the XBOX360, and the NINTENDO WII. Since your question only applies to the first 2 systems, I'll leave the Wii out on this one.

If your thinking about investing in a 360 or a PS3 then you have to think about investing in an HD television. Theres no other way around it if you want to get the most out of these great systems. Sure you can play them on standard, box televisions but the image quality is a disgrace and an insult to what these awesome systems are meant to do. You don't have to spend thousands of dollars on an HD television, you can get a lot of great deals online for under $800 or less. You just gotta look for them. Do yourself a favor and get an HD television as well, you'll be glad you did.

As far as which system is better based on games and capabilities, then that depends on what your looking for. On the graphical, power, and more money for your buck, go with the PS3. As for games, go with the 360 because it has a big library of games already established. 2008 is the year for the PS3 because a lot of great games are coming out for it, and many consumer analysts predict that this year is when the PS3 will trully compete with the 360. Some say the PS3 is destined to win because of its Blu Ray feature, its like its Ace up its sleeve.

Although recently I read that Sony is planning to work with Microsoft to establish their Blu Ray dominance. Now don't get me wrong, I didnt say come together or form an alliance, simply just work together for Blu Ray (Thats it). Although, Sony and Microsoft (the rivals right now) are actually working together for blu ray (thats weird). But Sony is not stupid and I know they must be doing it because they dont want to miss this chance with making Blu Ray the new 'DVD' for this generation. I wouldnt be surprised if later this year, Microsoft releases a new Xbox360 with a blu ray player already installed in it. It would make sense since Blu Ray has already won the HD format war. So theres something to think about.

As you can see, Blu Ray will eventually (I think) be part of them both, so thats not really an issue. The 360 has Gears of War and its sequel coming out soon, Halo 3 and another spin off coming soon. Bioshock and other great games that just dont come to mind right now. The PS3 has free online play, Metal Gear Solid 4, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Final Fantasy XIII, and other great games coming out as well. Possibly even a Final Fantasy VII remake! If your into Final Fantasy that would be HUGE to own and play! So cool!

We'll prices always go down for these products so expect a price drop in a few months. Get an HD television, that is what I recommend and good luck on choosing your next system cause their both great! Hope this helps.

This question is so often!!!

PS3 will win the console war, no doubt. Xbox 360 and Wii are so weak from technological point of view, that in couple of years they won't be capable of dealing with serious graphics. GTA IV, for instance, isn't even announced for Wii - this toy won't be able to cope with the game's requirements. Xbox 360 is getting GTA IV, however, the game is going to be released on several DVDs - Xbox 360 owners will have to interrupt gaming process and switch discs (Rockstar complained about this issue). Only PS3 will have it on single BD-DVD.

Let's compare PS3 and XBOX 360:

1). A third of XBOX 360 (33%) are malfunctioning right from the start. PS3 return rate is only around 0.2%. Despite some people say, that new 360 has no breakdown issues - just visit Xbox section of Yahoo answers and see for yourself an amount of complaints.

2). PS3 has 7 kernels in Cell processor, Xbox 360 -only 3.

3). PS3 uses advanced tech called Blu-Ray, one disc can store up to 25 (single layer) and dual layer 54 gb (in the future - up to 200 gb), Xbox 360 - regular dual layer DVD-9 (8.5GB). It's possible to get HD-DVD (max. - 30GB) for 360, but it'll cost you around 50$. Besides, HD-DVD had lost the format war with Blu-ray. Toshiba had stopped to manufacture them, Microsoft too.

4). Calculations per sec - PS3 - 51-billion-dot-product-operati... per second

Xbox 360 - 33.6-billion-dot-product-opera... per second

5). PS3 has full media support - USBs, built-in 4 slots card reader (except 20GB and 40GB versions), ability to use printer and so on.

Xbox 360 has USBs and only 2 memory slots.

6). PS3 supports up to 7 Bluetooth Controllers

Xbox 360 - up to 4 Controllers

7). PS3 - wi-fi included (except 20 gb version)

Xbox 360 - wi-fi will cost you around 100 $

8). From the first technical sight - graphics are stronger in 360 (it has a stronger graphics chip - Xenos), BUT PS3 can use it's Cell CPU for graphics too, which gives you better graphics in total. PS3 uses a weaker RSX chip, that was developed by Nvidia exclusively for PS3. RSX runs on 550 Mhz. It's difficult to compare their graphics, because 360 has a video chip with totally different structure and operating memory is divided differently in both consoles. Xbox isn't that versatile in dividing tasks between CPU and GPU as PS3. That's why PS3 exclusives look better than 360's exclusives.

9). Xbox 360 is widely known for so-called "red ring of death" problem - it gets overheated easily. My PS3 was running for more than 15 hours non-stop with no problems. Sometimes Xbox 360 becomes so overheated, that thermopaste on CPU melts, drips on motherboard and successfully shortcircuits it. That's why in some countries people call Xbox 360 "Coffin 360".

10). Besides all of this, I've seen disassembled Xbox 360 - regular PC architecture - Billy Gates is an uninventive nerd (as usual).

When I saw disassembled PS3 - it was a surprise - smart architecture, good cooling (don't buy external PS3 coolers - they make everything worse - original system is good), etc.

11). In 2008 PS3 will get more than 300 games, including Metal Gear Solid 4, The Agent and other great exclusives. Here is the good link to the future PS3 releases. http://ps3.ign.com/index/release.html......

12). PS3 online is free, Xbox 360 - you have to pay.

13). There were reports, that 360 scratches discs. No reports on that in PS3.

14). The funniest thing, that right now there are no games for PS3, that show full potential of the console. Biggest games weigh only 25 GB (Xbox 360 will need more than 3 discs even for those).

15). On PS3 you can install other OS, such as Linux Yellow Dog, Ubuntu and others. Sony officially lets you do it. There is no such thing in 360.

16). PS3 HDD can be replaced easily with any 2.5" SATA 5400 RPM HDD (used in laptops). 250 GB will cost you around 170$. In 360 you have to buy exclusive HDD, where 20GB will cost you 100$.

17).Sony expects PS3 to stay on the market for, at least, 7-10 years. Also Sony reduces price now. There is a cheaper 40GB version of PS3.

18).Sony constantly upgrades PS3 software (free updates for OS) - you get new functions and improvements.

19). PS3 controller (sixaxis) has a motion control - you move controller - game responds. Wii has it, Xbox 360 - doesn't. PS3 is getting rumble controller (Dualshock 3) on 15.04.2008, Japan already has it. On www.ebay.com I saw those controllers on sale 50$ and up (unofficial import).

20).On PS3 you can help sick people by running Folding Home project. Wii and Xbox 360 didn't even think about it.

21).New 40GB is 399$ or 399 euro (depends on the region) - it has no backwards compatibility with PS2 games, has 2 USBs instead of 4, no built-in card reader, but it's the same PS3, strong, reliable, less noisy, different cooling system. The price is friendly.

22). But, to be just, I'm not a PS3 fanboy, so (despite I own one) hear this - PS3 games (exclusives) are very hard to develop due to complicated Cell's architecture. We have to wait till developers will figure out how to develop games properly. Sometimes multiplatform games run not so good on PS3 due to the same developing issues - it's hard for developers to get a grip on such advanced technologies.

I didn't mention Wii, because it's so weak, no point to talk about it. Leave it for kindergarten and casual games.
