Say I have an AVI file or backup DVD image file on my PC and I burn it to a DVD, that is obviously region free, so will a Play Station 3 play it? I was under the impression that a PS3 won't play DVDs from other regions but not sure about its capability of playing home made discs or stored DVD files.

Yes. 99% of the DVD's that I play on my PS3 are backups.

Yes, PS3 can play a DVD burned from a PC, as long as you burn the DVD in the right format.

I always use this dvd burning software to burn avi video to DVD to play on my PS3, it works pretty well all the time. You may download it for a try, and here is a step by step guide about how to use it

Yes! As long as it's in a DVD format, you're set! Once you burn it on a DVD the format is changed, so anything that reads DVDs can read it.

I once played a data disc I burnt back in 2003 & the PS3 read it: pics, mp3s & all! I'm also a Netflix fan.
