Question:
Help, ps3 having problems - just me or global problem?
I have no idea...

Ive heard this is a growing problem!!!!!
i have it. ps3 reps are saying its not connected to the leap year bug but it is a coincidence. it seems to be happening to the earlier models, ie not the slims, but especially the 40 and 60gb's and 80gb's. ive heard if you want to send it into repair, it will cost more than buying a slim. sony are not taking any responsibility for this problem (until it becomes really major!) so right now there is nothing you can really do. im just going to turn it off and leave it off, not even on standby, until it is resolved, if it ever will be. im am very annoyed, it seems to be the blueray player, that's why you can still use pshome, etc but no games/dvds. ive heard that it can't be fixed, and that it can (but took 5 weeks) from different sources so im not too sure. im worried but im not coz this is a vastly growing problem, hopefully it will get so big that sony will have to take responsibility and take some action - they are aware of it but are not doing anything or taking responsibility as it is not costing them money or is a big enough problem...yet.
my problem is, to make it clear is:
i turn my ps3 on, go on pshome - all fine, load up the game (cod mw2) and it jams.
i try to turn it off by controller - not responding, try to turn it off by the touch button on the front - not responding, turn it off by the back button and it turns off. i let the fan turn off, turn it back on again and it does not recognise a disk, like there isn't one in there, but there is (there is also a 'jut jut' sound every 5 seconds from the disk spinning around). i turn the ps3 off, leave it for 5 minutes and turn it back on, it reads the disk, i load the disk and the whole process starts again. i have also tried another game - gta4 and it jams again.
i noticed that the date was a day wrong the other day so i corrected it and then the problems started happening (altho my ps3 was jamming more frequently prior to the date change but didn't have the not recognising problem so i don't know if that is a conscience too.) i have no idea what to do but all i know is that many people have this problem, that reassures me but panics me at the same time, especially as sony are not doing anything and i do not want to pay alot of money - i read this source, the guy had to pay $180 to change the blueray and the slim is only $140! so what should i do or do you know what the problem is? thanks :)

From your description, it sounds like you have an issue with your laser lens or the disc motor. Whatever it is, the laser assembly more than likely needs to be replaced. Sony will charge $150 US + tax & shipping to fix it or give you a replacement console. Assuming the laser lens or other related part is indeed the problem, the process should not take more than a couple weeks, even if they do fix the console, and most PS3 repairs don't need any longer than a month to fix, so I dunno where 5 weeks comes from. If you really want a cheaper solution, you can replace the assembly yourself. Its not a terribly complicated fix, though you'll still need a little electronics know-how. Be aware that this option will void any sort of Sony support for this console as soon as you open it (regardless why you open it). Look for the Blu-Ray chart that lists which console has which laser in the link below:

It has nothing to do with the leap year bug, which should have been resolved 24 hours after the bug occured.

There is one ridiculous part about your question and that is the fact that you say the Slim is only $140. The console retails for $299 and $349 brand new. Even used units aren't gonna be cheaper than $200 if the seller has a brain in his head. If someone got a Slim for $140, then its sheer luck. You're gonna have a very hard time finding a functioning Slim for $140 anywhere in the world. Having repair work on your console is not gonna be more expensive than getting another console entirely unless you have the repair done multiple times.

I have a similar problem. My ps3 works perfect in everyway and is reading every game fine but it wont read mercs 2 it jams everytime but any other game is fine. I am thinking you have a problem with your disk driver/reader whatever its called or at least thats what it sounds like to me

My MW2 trophies are long gone atm, they stated just to go away it for twenty-four hours so attempt it the following day. no longer all video games are effected however, you won't be able to flow on line, yet you could play old video games which don't have trophies.

just a rough answer but maybe the time is like 3:00 am instead of 3:00 pm so it jams itself so you cant play cause it doesn't want you to not play it so late or maybe the same problem but instead of it doesn't want you to not play it so late maybe its just a self defense so it doesn't overheat so it makes you not play it i don't really know wats wrong but its just a rough guess
