Yes, a HDMI cable will let you play in HD, older cables will only give you SD.

It looks awful because your tv is having to expand the SD image to fit the HD screen.

probably. it is very frustrating if you dont know how to do it. but learning how to do it is easy.

FIRST: you need to find an hdmi cable.

DO NOT PAY A LOT OF MONEY FOR HDMI CABLES! some companies sell hdmi cables for like $40 which is WAY overpriced. you can get a good hdmi cable from amazon.com for like $10

i looked up hdmi cables on amazon and this hdmi cable is the EXACT one i am using for my ps3 and 360. I would get this one

http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-High-Speed-Cable-Meters/dp/B003L1ZYYM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1298143065&sr=8-2

it is relatively cheap, it is gold plated meaning that it transfers information really fast, and amazonbasics is a good company to buy from. if for some reason it doesnt work out right, then you can easily return it and get a different one. but i have never had a problem with them and i have 5 HDMI devices with amazonbasics hdmi cable

SECOND: you need to hook up the hdmi cable. find the slots and then plug them in. its that easy. you need to know which channel on your TV the hdmi cable is going to be plugged into. you know how you have the different channels for your devices right? you press the button on your remote and it brings up the different input channels. there is one for each hdmi plug in on your tv

THIRD: you need to set up the hdmi on both your tv and ps3. when it is all plugged in, hold the power button on the ps3 for 5 seconds until it beeps a few times. then change to the hdmi channel on your tv and it should work. look up this video if you are having trouble. if this works, then skip the last step and just start playing right away. the video says it is for 1080p but 720p is what i use because to be honest, i cant tell the difference between 720p and 1080p

FORTH: if that doesnt work then do this

the first time you hook up your hdmi then you have to have both the hdmi and the old cables plugged in because you need to see what you are doing. go to your regular channel that you used to play games on. then you go to settings and audio settings. change the audio output to hdmi. then go to display settings and change the output to hdmi. after the screen goes off then change you TV channel to the hdmi channel and it should show up again. after that, you are good and you dont need to have the original cables plugged in anymore.

no longer really you could straight away connect it. you could also use ingredient cables to achieve extreme def. i do not propose taking area in on a rear projection television or a plasma because it may reason burn in. have exciting!
