I've been looking up comparisons of the several PS3 models, model CECHE01 in particular. On a comparison chart in the backward compatibility row it says "yes (software)". What does the word "software" in parenthesis mean? I also read an article that says this model has "limited backward compatibility." Can someone please explain this to me? Thanks.

The original launch PS3s had hardware backward compatibility; basically they had most components of a PS2 inside the console so games ran almost exactly like they were on a PS2. This model has something like 99% backward compatibility.

The next revision removed some of those extra components and replaced them with software, which isn't 100% the same as the hardware that was replaced. Because of this, some games don't work properly or even might not work at all. 85-90% of games still work, though.

Current revisions removed all the extra components, so there's no backward compatibility at all with the PS2. It'll still play PSone games.

If its the 80gb version with purely 2 usb ports then it purely helps ps1 video games backwards compatibility. The previous 80gb with 4 usb ports helps the two ps2 and ps1. edit- yet there are rumors of an finished ps2 emulation utility replace which could pop out quickly. Sony at present filed a patent for one and its up interior the air no rely if or no longer it will be applied.

The new one is not backwards compatible.
