Question:
What does "Other OS" mean on PS3?
2010-12-01 01:01:48 UTC
I'm trying to play a blue ray on my ps3, I've done it before perfectly fine. I just bought "The Expendables" on blue ray, when I try to play it it tells me to do a system update, so I do. When I do the update, right before it goes through it tells me the "Other OS" will not be able to be used? I don't understand what this means? What will happen if I click accept? Can someone tell me what the "Other OS" means or what it does? Is it okay if I click accept? What will happen if I do? What happens if I can't use the "Other OS?" Thanks a lot to who ever can answer all my questions!

Other os was a feature that allowed you to install linux on the ps3 but in firmware 3.21 sony removed that official reason was security reasons, however unofficial sources claim that they did that to get people not to use a ps2 emulator, ripping bluray and many other things. If you want to use it you could ignore the updates but then you cant play online and many other things, so do as you please but I updated because you can always get a cheap computer put linux on it then connect it with the tv.

Other OS was a feature that allowed PS3 owners to install a Linux Operating System on their PS3 to run homebrew applications and such. The fact that you don't even know what all this is means you do not use the feature, therefore, you have nothing to worry about. So click Accept.

Do you have a hacked/modified PS3? I'm assuming "other OS" means "other operating system"

Edit: Did you get it used? Because its possible to put another operating system on a ps3, maybe the person before you did so?
