Question:
I don't have the internet right now, but will the latest 'Playstation Network Update' help stabilize my PS3?

Here's the deal:

I just got a brand new 80GB PS3 for Christmas. I waited to open it until I was back in my dorm and now that it's all set up and ready, I'm having a little issue. I first popped in Unreal Tournament 3 and played around a bit. Flawless performance, until one spot in a cinematic. The sound got patchy and then just quit altogether. It was completely muted. I quit the game and when I played it again, it went through with sound, except for about 10 seconds in the beginning of the mission objectives the audio was skippy. Every other in-game sound is perfectly normal though.

Next I put SSX Tricky in. I played through the first mountain just fine, but when I went to the second one, it froze completely. Just out of the blue, frozen. The disk drive was also making a weird noise at this point. It sounded like it had a read error (which, judging by the frozen screen, I'm guessing it did).

UT3's fine, except for those initial 10 seconds. Are these disk errors or system failures?

I don't think a system update would help with that, but you might as well get the updates you need from playstation.com.

If that doesn't help call tony tech support and have them help you.

You can update your Firmware from your PCs internet with a memory card or a usb thumb drive.

Your problems could be related to that but they could also be related to a overheating problem. The Playstation 3 has some of the top of the line components mostly the Cell and the faster they are the more heat they make.

Keep your Playstation 3 in a well ventalated area. I would recommend out in the open without any type of box or cabinat around it. I put mine in a very large cabinat and you could still fell all the heat coming from the inside of it. It didn't effect it any but for safty reasons I leave it out in the open.

You could also be one of the .2% failure rate. I've seen all sorts of random problems with the playstation 3. I've seen a messed up graphics card where some of the stuff in the game showed up green rather then the correct color and I have heard a lot about blu-ray drive problems. From what I can tell you probably have a blu-ray drive problem and should contact sony about it.

If you do have a drive problem and you have it sitting vertical try putting it horizontal just to see if that could be the problem.

The only real way to solve a problem like this is to search and eliminate. Try all sorts of stuff to try to narrow it down. Like right now I think it's a blu-ray drive issues. So once you get internet try downloading a demo of the playstation network try 2-3 of them you like and see if you get any technical problems in those games.

Also try some Playstation or Playstation 2 titled software if you have any that you know that work and see if they have issues in your playstation 3. Though the only problem with that is it could relate to not being a supported game in the backwards compadiblility though I have never had a problem with it.

Also try different games you should have got Motorstorm with your Playstation 3 and see if that works or has any problems, of course you say it limited to different parts of the game so if you don't enjoy the game you may not play it long enough to get to the error which is completely ok.

If you have any questions fell free to contact using the contact feature in my profile.

They sound like disc problems.. maybe hdd .. maybe the reader.. maybe the games themselves (though i doubt it)

I assume your hoping its not one of these and hope a patch can help you. Since you can write here, I'll assume you indeed do have an internet connection but you can't connect your ps3 to the internet maybe because your ps3 is in a "non internet" area

What you can do is.. go to

manually download the update, manually install it and see what happens. if its no good then you should probably consider sending it in for a check
