i have never done a usb update i have always done it by sd card or the PS3 its self but when i do a sd card update its gos like this on the root of the usb you make a folder and name it PS3 open it and make another folder name it UPDATE and put the update in there then put it in your system and go to update on the system menu and click update via storage media and yes it is case sensitive here is a url that will also help http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/pc_update/index.htm
