The TV is an HDTV and I have an HDMI cable that I use for the video. What kinds of specifications do I need to look for when picking? HDMI input and output? TOSLINK audio? Thanks in advance.

well, if you do buy a HDMI compliant home theater reciever, make sure that it supports HDCP. They're still a bit pricey ($700.00-1,000.00) but well worth it.

It looks like its hooked as much as in elementary terms paintings with your digital television channels and not enter instruments hooked as much as the television. Your receiver possibly has an optical digital enter. it is gonna supply you the wonderful obtainable sound connection. no longer all A/V receivers will pass audio by way of by potential of way of the HDMI. Optical is by potential of a techniques a extra assured answer and, frankly, i could take Optical over HDMI for sound anyday.
