I have a 60gb ps3 uk version and i use my pc as a media server.
I use to copy files (mainly videos) from pc to ps3 but now when i try do this it doesn't work
i convert my videos using specific ps3 software such as mkv2vob and ps3video9
once a video is converted i put it onto my memory stick and copy it to the ps3 but when i store the file onto my pc sharing videos folder and go to my ps3 and select the folder, the video is there but it says unsupported data.
clearly the video is supported by the ps3 as it works through usb but not media servers.
pictures transfer fine its just video.
the main video format i use is mp4 and vob

Did you know that if you have TVersity on your PC, you don't have to copy your videos to your PS3 to watch them. You can stream/watch it directly from your PC's hard drive to your PS3. That way, you save a lot of space from your PS3's hd.
