Unless you are willing to spend top dollar (> $2500) for an excellent gaming laptop, I say go with a PS3. The PS3 has everything it needs to be great already installed. With a laptop, you have to make sure you get top end parts to fully experience many of the top games. Since computer technology keeps evolving, computer games (and their system requirements) will keep evolving as well. I think it is safe to say that the PS3 will not change its hardware during it's life, and game developers will always work with the technology you already have. No need to upgrade.
Also, unless you are getting an amazing laptop geared exclusively toward gaming, getting a laptop for gaming is not worth it. I used to play games on my Dell 8100 laptop, and my computer would approach 150 degrees Farenheit about 45 minutes into whatever game I was playing. Its fans simply couldn't handle it, and I was not even playing a game that had high system requirements.
Lastly, if you have friends over at your house, you can all play a PS3, but only one can play a computer game on your computer.
I say go with a PS3.

Both are pretty expensive. Esp. the PS3 at the moment. I happen to think getting a PS3 is a waste a money, but that's because I got a great working PS2. I suggest maybe a laptop would be better. If you get a laptop, make sure you try this game called The Sims 2. It has to be the best PC game out there right now! If you wanna get a PS3, I suggest waiting a year or so. They'll lower the price and work out the bugs! ^.^

That's personal preference. Do you like console games or computer games? They are both good. Laptop will not be able to play all games eventually, but PS3 can only play PS3 games til they stop making them. They both have a downside. Plus, a gaming laptop will cost more but you can do so much more with it.
